WINNER: Kathrine Homan, Bowling Green, Ohio, writes this about her favorite autumn image “Cape Breton Highlands National Park - Nova Scotia” which is included in Fall Colors Across America by Anthony E. Cook: My eyes were drawn to this particular picture almost immediately. My favorite time in the fall is before all the leaves have changed color. So that while there are oranges, reds and yellows, there's still some green peeking in here and there. It's like summer is still trying to hold on, even though it knows it's a loosing battle. Then there's the contrast between the bright look-at-me colors of trees and the almost neutral dark rocks and white water. They provide an almost quiet peacefulness to counter act all the color "noise" your eye takes in. Like a calming oasis within an already peaceful existence in a wooded area.
Semi-finalists:
Mary Keleher, Carmel, Indiana: Autumn's Canopy - Autumn’s Bounty of Color by James Randklev - As autumn sets in, I always feel that less daylight shortens my daily 'route' and I have to rush from path to path to squeeze in as much as possible This photo captures an opposite feeling - It encourages a quiet meander down a long road, savoring the changing canopy of color along the beautiful slow path to winter.
Kevin Wilson, Salem, Massachusetts: Golden Showers - A Blaze of Color by Tony Sweet - You feel as though you are there and can smell that distinct fragrance that is autumn. Also the old fence provokes a sense of nostalgia. Almost makes you want to rake together a big pile of those golden leaves and allow yourself to freefall off that fence and land like a "leaf angel".
