Who wouldn't be captivated by a country where the king, who is revered by his people, has instituted a policy of Gross National Happiness as a way to measure progress in his land? Bhutan, nestled in the heart of the great Himalaya, has for centuries remained aloof from the rest of the world. Since its doors were cautiously opened in 1974, visitors have been mesmerized: the environment is pristine, the scenery and architecture awesome and the people hospitable and charming. Discover why a tiny country with one main road and only five months of prime travel weather has catapulted to the cutting edge of high-end tourism. Daniel deMoulin, noted travel photographer, was one of the fortunate ones to be granted permission to travel in this remarkable land. There he viewed prayer flags on high mountain slopes; he immersed himself in the awesome natural environment with verdant green hills, towering peaks, and isolated trails; and he experienced a culture and traditional lifestyle that is still richly intact. Although it measures only 110 miles from the north to south and 200 miles from east to west, Bhutan - called by its people Druk Yul, "the Land of the Thunder Dragon," is perhaps one of the most breathtaking and mysterious of the nations in the world today. Daniel invites you to share the Bhutan adventure!
