Lost in the Woods
by Carl R. Sams II and
Jean Stoick

Award-winning wildlife photographers and authors Carl R. Sams II and his wife, Jean Stoick, have combined their talents to create this beautiful collection of images from their second "New York Times" best-selling children’s book, "Lost in the Woods." This collection of candid photos will enchant children from age 2 to 92 and take them deep into the lush green springtime forest.

"Lost in the Woods" is the story of a newborn fawn who the furry and feathered friends of the forest fear is lost. They soon discover that he's not really lost, but alone by nature's design. Newborn fawns spend most of the first weeks of their life without mom because her scent could attract predators to her babe. She instinctively knows to stay only briefly to nurse and care for her fawn. He will travel with her when he is older and stronger.

Throughout both of their best-selling children’s books, "Lost in the Woods" and "Stranger in the Woods," they have included gentle lessons of nature. Carl and Jean are glad to have found a medium through which they can share their love of the outdoors and teach others to appreciate the wonders of the natural world.

Teachers and librarians are some of the couples’ best supporters, and in celebration of Michigan’s 2005 “March is Reading” month Carl and Jean donated a copy of Lost in the Woods to every public elementary school in the state. Schools from the Upper Peninsula to Detroit — 2,072 books with a retail value of $19.95 each — were given to the schools.

The go-along Connect-It curriculum guides (available on their website) were developed for teachers in the classroom to use in conjunction with the books. They include more than 60 pages of fun learning activities for children grades K-4.
