1993 marked the 90th anniversary of manned flight. During those 90 years, man has gone from primitive bi-winged flying machines to landing on the moon and traveling many times the speed of sound. However, the romance, danger, and excitement of the early years of flying--extending through World War Two--have always held a fascination for the aviation enthusiast.
For the past 20 years, Michael O'Leary has been photographing these aircraft in their natural element--the air. Currently, very few of these historic aircraft remain flyable. For example, of the 10,000 Boeing B-17 Flying Fortresses built during WWII, only ten remain flyable today. Wherever these rare planes travel, they always attract an admiring crowd of spectators and give us the privilege of studying our not-so-distant past.
