Mrs. Davis' Chair by Curtis Krueger

This surely is one of the most unique collections Second Nature has had the honor of presenting.

Mrs. Davis was a beloved elderly neighbor of Curtis Krueger, award-winning nature photographer. One afternoon he spied an antique iron garden chair in her backyard. Explains Curtis, “The next morning I ‘borrowed’ it and took it to the beach, photographing it under the changing light of dawn. I titled the photo Mrs. Davis' Chair goes to the Beach. I gave the photo to her for her 98th birthday. She loved it and in return gave me her chair. After she passed away at 102, I began a photographic journey of Mrs. Davis’ Chair throughout all 50 States. The morning of March 8th, 2005 found me on a steep ridge overlooking the rugged Nã Pali Coast of Kauái. A rainbow was shining in the valley below. Rain was drifting in and out of this exotic landscape. I was in the middle of what was to be an 11 mile hike. This was the moment when I knew I had reached my goal of photographing Mrs. Davis’ Chair across this beautiful and diverse land. Countless miles and some 550 rolls of film were used to bring this project to completion.” Watch for a soon to be released book, "Mrs. Davis Chair Crosses America."

Krueger has an inspired eye for scenery and the treasured chair adds irony, humor, poignancy and scale to the compositions. Mrs. Davis, spunky and independent, virtually went nowhere in her long life. In contrast, her chair has been chauffeured and photographed in glorious spots in all 50 states.

Kruger explains, “I dedicate this project to the memory of Mrs. Davis and for the unexpected gift of this little rugged antique garden chair.” I’m sure you’ll be touched by this exceptional collection, as was I when one of our Second Nature customers, Ellie Moses, recommended his photos for a collection.

Thanks, Curtis and Ellie ......... and thank you, Mrs. Davis.

?? Some people have asked if the antique garden chair was added digitally to some of the gorgeous photos, and the answer is "absolutely not." Mrs. Davis regretfully did not get to travel much at all in her long life, but her chair traveled thousands of miles across America.
