Romantic Gardens of the Early 1900's

These elegant turn of the century gardens, photographed originally on black and white glass slides, were then hand colored to form a permanent record of the garden's beauty. The Smithsonian's Horticulture Division archives over 30,000 of these lantern projector images, a precursor of the present-day slide projector.
