How can I solve general downloading problems?

Generally, download and installation problems are related to connection problems, not enough working space on your computer’s hard drive, or a proxy server is preventing communication.

To successfully download files from any Web site, you must have a stable connection to the Internet. If you can successfully download large files (5MB to 8MB) from other popular sites, your Internet connection is likely to be stable, and you should be able to successfully download files from our Web site. However, a marginal connection to the Internet can create errors, especially when downloading large files.

If the telephone line you are using to connect to the Internet sounds noisy when used for voice communications, the download speed will be slower. If your connection to the Internet is interrupted because you have Call Waiting or another telephone service that may interrupt the connection, make sure these services are temporarily disabled. If you have installed any Internet download applications to enhance download performance and reliability, disable it, uninstall it, or contact the manufacturer of the application to ensure that the software is working as expected and isn’t damaged or configured incorrectly.

Examples of a marginal connection are the file transfer pauses intermittently while downloading, the file stops downloading before the download is complete, or your computer unexpectedly disconnects from the Internet. The download transfer rate should be at least 1.0 Kbps (most Web browsers will show you the rate of transfer) for the entire duration of your download, but it should not drop below 1.0Kbps at any time. If the download pauses for more than 15 seconds more than once, or pauses for more than 60 seconds at any time then you may have a corrupted download. If the file is corrupted, an error message appears when you try to open the downloaded file.

Empty your Temporary Internet Files directory, using the Internet Options for your browser, and ensure that there is enough free space on your hard drive (usually at least 10MB should be free) to save the download. To increase available disk space, delete any unnecessary files and applications. If possible, use a disk utility program to optimize the hard disk after deleting files.

If you log onto your computer with a user name and password, make sure that you have the appropriate permissions to install programs.

And lastly, you may not be able to complete the installation if you are connecting via a proxy server that is not allowing the connection to our Authorization Server. You will need to discuss this problem with your System Administrator or your Internet Service Provider (ISP) directly.

CUSTOMER APPLAUSE: I'm pretty much home-bound and your screen savers bring places to me that I can't visit - which is a joy. BUT I buy them because it's a way I can travel *and* support environmental causes at the same time. And of course because of the high quality of your contributors' photographs. Thanks for the joy and thanks for supporting the earth. Ellie Moses, Knoxville, Tenn.
